Sourdough baking is the latest trend, and baker across the country are making starters and perfecting their sourdough skills. It makes sense, then that Jess Ross’ new sourdough cookbook, Rise: A Devotion to Whole Grains is one that belongs on every one of those baker’s shelves. Ross owns a small sourdough bakers in Nova Scotia, and makes her loaves with different grains. She learned her trade in Germany, working in a bakery there, and learning from expert bakers. She has become an expert herself, and this excellent cookbook passes her passion on to those of us who like making sourdough at home.

Ross has included loaves made with grains that are easily accessible in the US, and suggests that they are ground fresh each time. I have an electric grinder, so this isn’t a problem for me, but I have tried some of her recipes using store-bought flour, and they still turn out well.
The cookbook takes readers through all of the basics of sourdough baking, including making starters, which is very helpful. With the help of a talented professional photographer, Jennifer (JK) Murphy, readers see as well as read all of the steps for success. The photographs of the loaves are beautiful. The cookbook also includes cookies, cakes, and other yummy sourdough dishes, and they are also shown in beautiful color.

All told, this is the cookbook to have if you’re into sourdough. It also makes an excellent gift for friends who are starting out.
