Buried Secrets

Joanna M. Weston

forget the songs that turned
Mother’s voice to winter jasmine
when she walked alone

lose the time she changed direction
because a hawk swooped
from an elm tree

or when she picked mushrooms
in an apple orchard
and gave them to gypsies

bury them all in a coffin
made of hawthorn wood
and January clouds
