The Red and the Black Comes To The Stage
The Red and the Black (Le Rouge et le Noir) by is a novel from 1830 written by Stendhal that chronicles the journey of a young man, named Julien, attempting to climb the social ladder by becoming a priest Along the way are waves deception, seduction and hypocrisy. Let's just say that Julien is a total hottie and he has a way with women.

If you find yourself watching reality shows or TV shows like, Scandal, the stage version of "The Red and the Black", adapted and directed by Deloss Brown will be right up your alley. It is the first time this classic novel has hit the stage. It is produced by Capolavori Productions a production company of the Italian Academy Foundation.

The play is great classic tale of a boy meet girl then passion changes both of their lives. When Louise (Krista Adams Santilli) first meets Julian (Lucas Wells) she can not stand him, but over time she warms up, her juices kick in, and Julian decides that she will be his target for seduction. His goal is to take advantage of her as he gets revenge on the aristocrats. Louise is conflicted by what she is feeling also aware the fact that it is a sin due to her being married with three children. Who could blame her for wanting a younger and interesting man since her husband is a big bore who thinks when are complicated machines. All while this is going on Julian is attempting to become a priest. Yes, a priest.

There are several twists and turns in the plot which I do not want to give away, because the fun in watching the show is seeing what will happen next. There is a delicious array of characters in the show such Elisa (Katie Burton) get turned down by Julian but gets her revenge by spreading gossip and then there is Marie (Jessica Myhr) who gets tricked into reading Voltaire by Julian. There are lovely scenes in the show that are delightful tastes of the art of seduction. There is also a passionate love scene between Louise and Julian. A scene that any lady who calls herself a cougar would love.

This show has a little something for everyone who likes a good scandal to follow. It is great way to spend the evening and take in a classic.

"The Red and the Black" runs through February 3rd through at St. Clement Theatre, 423 W. 46th St., OvationTix: 866-811-4111
